Advocacy Panel — Action Plan for Med Students
Navigating advocacy — what to do when you are struggling to navigate difficult conversations and/or pushback:
- The little things drive change:
- Pronoun badges are a great start, quiet and easy to do, signalling effect to consultants to not be seen as un-inclusive
- Pride flags takedown in the NT - after the ban there were pride flags everywhere in the hospital put up by med students/junior doctors
- If you feel intimidated about having meetings, do it indirectly - write suggestions and solutions, even if it doesn’t have a direct impact it will have an impact the next time they review the course
- Other things to draw on:
- Consider the AMC’s guide as well
- National LGBTQIA+ 10-year plan
- Use your power!
Say “I’m part of AMSA Queer” etc, “it’s been taken up by medical schools”, “we’re running our own teaching groups now”
- There is direct authority but there is also informal authority - i.e. my peers support me, I have knowledge on this
- But also reverse the power dynamic - lacking a job to lose as a med student
- There is a false belief that being loud as a doctor can lose your job - but you’re not being unreasonable, you’re advocating for your community!
- Case study: Struggling to start a queer society at UNDS med school and being shut down every time
- Think: It might not happen in my time, but you can reach out to a core group of people to continue the advocacy. You are a living example of the work being worthwhile
- This is not a new thing. The uni has a duty of care to students and this is part of it. Also self care is a big part of this - rather than finding the cynicism in the world, find the absurdity
- There’s lots of similar fights going on. You’re not alone, there’s connections with everyone here (including Universities Australia and other peak bodies). That’s the good thing about talking, you can make these connections and linkages
